Slovaks strong in opening victory over Great Britain

The start of the game belonged to Slovakia, as they opened the scoring with a goal by Andrej Siakeľ, who quickly found his way around the net. By the end of the first period, Šimon Lopušan had made it 2-0 by converting on the power play with a sharp shot. In the middle period, Slovakia continued to pressure in the attacking zone. The British did get some opportunities in the power play, but they were unable to capitalize. The reins were then taken back by the Slovaks, who added six more goals and went into the dressing room with a commanding 8-0 lead. In the final frame, the Slovaks continued their dominance, adding three more goals by Martin Zummer, Ivan Korbíny and Marek Putala. The final score was 11-0, giving Slovakia an opening victory without any major problems.

Coaches´ Quotes

Luke Browne (GBR): "I think we started very well. But at the end of periods we can't fall down like we did in the second period. We can take a lot of positives into Thursday's game. We'll rest up and go again tomorrow."

Milan Rampáček (SVK): "It was one of the must-win games for us, as Britain are not yet one of the teams we should be "afraid of". We played responsibly, decided the game in a short time and then it was just a game of finishing. I am happy for the attitude of the boys and we will go on with humility game by game."
