Canada U23s build first-period lead, defeat Slovakia 6–2

The game started evenly balanced. It was Canada who opened the scoring, as Jagjeevan Phangura found the net with a shot from the left circle. Owen Weihs followed up from close range, and just two minutes later, Jason Grannitto made it 3–0. Slovakia struggled to create significant chances, even on the power play. However, the Slovaks came out strong in the second period and reduced the deficit thanks to a goal by Marek Putala. The video review did not confirm goaltender interference, so the goal stood. Although Slovakia had more shots, their finishing was poor. On the other hand, the Canadians took advantage of their opportunities and scored three more goals. Slovakia tried to make the game more dramatic but only managed to score once more.

Coaches´ Quotes

Paul Kastes (CAN): "It was a great game for us, we came into it strong and played our system. We're only going to get better every game here, but this is a big and important win for us. We are happy with the performance."

Milan Rampáček (SVK): "I think Canada won deservedly, they were one step faster and more assertive everywhere. We came up empty on four power plays; that's a lot. We should have scored one or two goals. So Canada was better and we lost the game, but we still have two more games to play where we can decide the fate of the tournament."
