Slovaks finish U23 group stage with win over rival Czechs

The last match of the group stage of the World Junior Championship offered an interesting game between the Czech and Slovak U23 teams. The Slovaks started better, leading 2-0 after two goals by Andrej Siakeľ. However, the host team turned the game around in the second period. The last few minutes of the third period belonged to the Slovaks again, and in the end, Oliver Vojčík scored the winning goal to make it 4-3. Coaches´ Quotes

Jiří Mašík (CZE): "Of course, the loss is unfortunate. It started in the first period; we did not start well at all. It's very difficult to motivate ourselves for such a game when we knew that we were guaranteed a place in the final. On the other hand, we wanted to beat Slovakia, that's always a prestigious match, but it was in the boys' heads, and that was reflected in the first period. They jumped ahead of us in terms of results and play, we made a small change in the second period. It gave us some jump, we turned the game around, but it still wasn't the same. We wanted to tie it up, but we couldn't even get the power plays and we were a bit tired. The important thing was that no one got injured."

Milan Rampáček (SVK): "I think the fans saw a great game. We were leading, then the Czechs turned things around and had it under control, but the strength of the team showed and we turned it around again. There was great dedication in the weak moments. The team has character, I'm proud of everyone from the equipment manager to the last player. I hope it works out tomorrow and we end the tournament the way we imagined."
