Wild shootout right from the start: Swiss U16 defeat Hungary 8–6 in thrilling match

The game started at a furious pace, with both teams trading odd-man rushes. In the 4th minute, Botond Polányi broke through on the right wing and drove to the net, giving Hungary an early lead. However, the momentum began to shift, and the Swiss juniors started to capitalize. Andy Geissbühler equalized with a powerful slap shot from the blue line during a power play. The pressure from the team from the land of the Helvetic cross continued to mount, pinning Hungary in their own zone, until Janis Gaschen managed to squeeze the puck past Jonathan László’s pads. The Swiss U16 side began the second 15-minute period in dominant fashion, quickly extending their lead to 5–1. But Hungary fought back with remarkable resilience—scoring twice in just 19 seconds and cutting the deficit to one goal with only seven seconds left in the period. The Swiss responded immediately at the start of the final frame, netting a goal on their first play and settling the nerves. The Hungarians, however, refused to give up and scored two more goals. Yet a dramatic comeback wasn’t in the cards, and the Swiss youngsters held on to claim a heroic 8–6 victory.

Coaches´ Quotes

Patrik Kozma (HUN): „It was a tough match for both teams. For us, it's a great experience and a lesson for the upcoming games.“

Tobias Strahm (SUI): „We're happy that we won, and huge respect to the Hungarian team. They had a strong forecheck that caused us problems. It's good that we scored eight goals, but we have to keep working and focus on the next match against the Czech Republic.“
