Slovaks start successfully; edge out USA 4-2

The game started at a slow pace with few chances on either side. The breakthrough came in the ninth minute when Slovak forward Róbert Krajňák found the back of the net. From that moment on, Slovakia took control of the game, but despite their pressure, they couldn’t convert it into more goals, and the first period ended with a 1–0 lead. In the second period, the Americans performed slightly better, until their lack of discipline gave Slovakia three power-play opportunities. Despite that, the Americans managed to equalize. Just four seconds before the end of the second 15-minute period, Anthony Magliocco scored. The final and decisive part of the game was evenly matched. Both teams were pushing to take the lead, and eventually, it was Slovakia that succeeded, with Róbert Krajňák scoring his second goal of the game. Slovakia had a chance to extend their lead through a penalty shot, but they failed to convert it. Lukáš Mrva later made it 3–1, but the action didn’t stop there. Near the end of the game, Team USA had a 5-on-3 power play, and Brady Gabriel capitalized on the opportunity. However, Slovakia stayed composed and secured their first win of the tournament with an empty-net goal.

Coaches´ Quotes

Willie Rennebeck (USA): "It was a very good game from both teams which competed and fought hard to the end. We were happy with the way we started, we just didn't finish. But we have a lot of positives to build on."

Róbert Alföldy (SVK): "For the beginning of the championship, we got a quite strong opponent, but I think the game was in our hands from the beginning. In the first period, we ran into our opponent the way we wanted to. We were slowed down a bit by a goal four seconds before the end of the second period. We had a talk in the locker room afterwards and urged the boys to get back to the game from the first period. In the final period, we went up by two goals but we couldn't defend the opponents' long power play. But the boys did what they were supposed to do from the first to the last second. The victory definitely belongs to them and I think it was well deserved."
