USA beats Canada 8-5 in wild U16 semifinal

The USA entered the game as underdogs but started the semi-final against their Canadian rivals in a spectacular way. They took the lead in the second minute, and then had a goal called back a few seconds later because of a goal crease infringement. Another 30 seconds later later, Anthony Magliocco in the right circle spun around Gavin Whiston and shot inside the near post to make it 2-0. Canada then reduced the deficit on a goal by Tristan Follick, but Ian Basilio made a cross pass to Ryan Gallen, who scored to restore the Americans' two-goal lead. Just four seconds before the end of the first period, however, Payton Shave beat Jake Glenn from the point to make it 3-2. Right at the beginning of the second period, however, Ian Basilio returned the Americans to a two-goal advantage with his second goal. More drama came at 21:50, when Adrian Sgro scored on the power play to once again draw Canada near, but after a blunder by goalie Matteo Cinelli and two more quick goals, the Americans were in the driver's seat. At the end of the third period, after a great onslaught while playing without a goalie, the Canadians revived their hopes of a comeback when they managed to score two goals, but the Americans did not let their historic advancement to the finals be taken away.

Coaches´ Quotes

Dave Weloy (CAN): "Today the results did not go well for us. I am very proud of our boys, they battled as hard as they could. Unfortunately we run into a very very talented and hardworking USA team so good for them, they really showed they are devoted for each other. And you know momentum is hard one to keep."

Will Rennebeck (USA): "I do not even know where to start, it was a very wild game. We knew it was going to be very physical, the talent we were up against and the tradition Canada has. It feels really good to have a chance to fight for more than just a bronze like we have the last two years because the guys are working harder than any team I have ever coached and I am really proud of them."
