Czech Red holds off late Slovak push, advances to U16 final

The Czech Red team defeated the previously unbeaten Slovakia in the semi-finals and, after two years, will play the United States for the U16 World Championship title. The Czechs led from the eighth minute and increased their lead to 2-0 early in the second period. However, the Slovaks scored on the power play and in the dying minutes, they pulled their goalie and pressed hard for the equalizer but came up short. Josef Flechtner contributed two points to the victory. The last time the Czechs were in the final was at the home championship in Liberec in 2023, which they ultimately won.

Coaches´ Quotes

Róbert Alföldy (SVK): "I think it was an absolutely even match. The fans certainly got their money's worth because they saw an excellent game and a lot of opportunities from both sides. We missed our chances in the second period a bit when the guys were falling behind, and the Czechs were often outnumbered. We said something about it before the final period and managed to score a goal, but unfortunately, we were unlucky at the end and didn't score on the power play. We congratulate our opponent and keep our fingers crossed for them. It's not over for us yet, because tomorrow we have the bronze medal match and we will fight for it."

Michal Koza (CZR): "It was a very important game that we were able to play here. After the loss to Canada, we are back on the path to where we wanted to be, we played very actively, blocked shots and did not give the other team room to pass. We had some downtime, but we were able to survive it with Ondra Charvát's great goaltending. There is only one last step left, which will be extremely difficult, because the Americans are playing great. It will definitely be a close game and we are looking forward to it."
