The quality of the team will be at least the same as in Liberec, says U23 world champion Jiří Štěpánek

In mid-February, the first training camp of the Czech U23 national team took place in Dobřany — and among the players was Jiří Štěpánek. He already experienced one world championship with the U23s — and it ended in gold! How does he remember it, and what does he think about the strength of the current U23 squad?

The first thing I remember is Nicolas Langr’s golden goal

Jiří, you took part in the U23 national team camp in Dobřany in mid-February. What was the focus and how did it go?
Over the weekend, we had five training sessions in total, including two scrimmages. The coaches emphasized communication, full concentration on finishing, and driving hard to the net.

Did the coaches outline what the preparation will look like moving forward? The league season is in full swing and time is limited…
Yes, there should be two training camps in June before the World Championship. The coaches also stressed the importance of continuing to work on ourselves after the season ends and to stay ready for the upcoming camps.

You were part of the gold-winning team at the World Championship in Liberec. How do you remember it? What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Liberec”?
The World Championship in Liberec is the biggest thing I’ve ever experienced in ball hockey. I especially remember the group of guys we had — it was a special bond. When someone says “Liberec,” the first thing I think of is Nicolas Langr’s golden goal in overtime against Slovakia in the final.

Czech fans are among the best

The atmosphere at the home World Championship was absolutely electric. Does that motivate you to play in front of home fans again?
Of course — it’s definitely motivating to play at home again. Czech fans are among the best, and I believe they’ll push us just like they did in Liberec.

As you mentioned, you were part of the U23 team two years ago. How much has the team changed since then? Are gold medal ambitions on the table again?
The team has changed a lot — it’s made up of players from three different age groups. But I think the quality will be at least the same as in Liberec. Winning another gold medal would be amazing, and I believe this team has what it takes to do it.

Where do you think the biggest strength of your team lies?
Our strength will definitely be in finishing and converting scoring chances, and also in special teams like power plays. There are a lot of skilled players here who can decide games. And I truly believe we’ll be a strong and unified team.
